Save Your Tooth, Relieve the Pain

A root canal treatment is a dental treatment to remove and disinfect inflamed or infected pulp tissue of the tooth, and then thoroughly cleaned, filled with biocompatible material to seal it off from the oral environment to prevent reinfection of the tooth. 1. Your First Visit

At Smile Arts Dental, we strive to make root canal treatment as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

During the first visit, the dentist will perform examination and diagnosis to identify the cause of the pain and, and the causative tooth. X-ray / CT scan will be taken to confirm the diagnosis.

After confirming diagnosis, local anesthetic will be administered. The dentist will initiate the root canal treatment by creating a small access hole on the top of the tooth to remove inflamed and infected pulp tissue, and continue to clean the pulp chamber and root canal space to make sure there is no remnant tissue. Temporary medications will be sealed into root canal space to resolve the infection & inflammation, you will be given a follow up appointment after 2-4 weeks.

2. Your Second Visit

On the next visit, the dentist will continue to clean your root canal thoroughly and finally seal it with biocompatible material.

A crown will be indicated after completing the root canal treatment to protect the tooth.

You may experience some discomfort on chewing after root canal treatment for a few days, but this will subside as the tooth heals.

Your dentist will advise you to avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it has been fully restored with a crown.

What are the advantages of root canal treatment ?

Choosing a root canal over extraction has several advantages:

Whenever possible, natural tooth should not be removed unless is deemed hopeless by any available treatment option.

Root canal treatment resolves the associated pain normally on the same day after treatment allowing you to eat, chew, and speak comfortably.

Treating the infection early helps prevent it from spreading to other teeth or areas of your mouth. In rare cases, tooth infection can lead to cyst formation in the jaw bone and soft tissue, which require complicated surgery treatment if it happens.

What is the success rate of root canal treatment?

Non complicated root canal treatments have a high success rate ( 90% or above). However, in rare cases, if the tooth structure is compromised or the infection has become chronic, the treated tooth may fail in a shorter than expected period.  Extraction or retreatment may be necessary.

Following the procedure, there may be some mild discomfort or sensitivity, but this is usually temporary and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

In most cases, a dental crown is recommended after a root canal to protect the tooth from excessive chewing force and bacteria invasion from the oral cavity.

A root canal-treated tooth protected with a crown can last many years if good oral hygiene and dietary habits are practiced besides regular dental check up.

The objective of root canal treatment is to relieve pain rather than induce pain. The pain relief after treatment is often immediate. The procedure is done under local anesthetic hence it is painless during the treatment. You may feel some discomfort after treatment which lasts 1-2 days.
